What is hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is a totally natural state of mind. When under hypnosis you will feel very relaxed, just like that wonderful feeling when you are tired lying in your bed and you are so overcome with comfort that you wish the moment could last forever. Through simple hypnotic, relaxation techniques you can easily attain this state at which time it becomes easy, with the help of a trained hypnotherapist, to visualise yourself becoming healthier, happier, more confident, a non-smoker. Whatever it is that you want to be!

How does it work?

You are led, by means of the hypnotherapist’s gently guiding voice, into a state where your body and mind are relaxed and nearly asleep. To an onlooker it might seem as if you were totally asleep but in fact, though you will normally feel very relaxed, you will remain awake enough to be aware. Also awake will be those parts of your mind which the therapist is working with to induce beneficial changes. This may mean that you will be picturing, as in a daydream, the things which are being spoken of and that you may experience the associated pleasant feelings.

These suggestions help people make positive changes within themselves. Long gone are the days when hypnosis was seen as waving watches and controlling people’s minds. In a hypnotherapy session you are always in control and you are not made to do anything. It is generally accepted that all hypnosis is ultimately self-hypnosis. A hypnotist merely helps to facilitate your experience – hypnotherapy is not about being made to do things, in fact it is the opposite, it is about empowerment.

It does involve the induction of a relaxed condition, but when in it, the patient is actually in an enhanced state of awareness, concentrating entirely on the hypnotist’s voice. In this state, the conscious mind is suppressed and the subconscious mind is revealed.

How hypnosis can help.

So how could hypnosis help? Well, first of all hypnotherapy generally involves hypnosis combined with relaxation which in itself is one of the key elements. First you learn to relax physically; with practice this is very quick and very simple. Secondly, you learn to relax mentally. In fact, many people come to see a hypnotherapist for something they believe to be completely unrelated and are amazed that their sleep improves as a consequence of dealing with the other thing. This is one of the most empowering effects of hypnosis – you learn to change one thing and so many other things fall into place. Hypnosis will help you take control and re-educate your mind into relaxing.Hypnosis can also help you to learn how to just slow things down.
